About Today, Novber 23, 2019;  Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

“Jesus answered, ‘My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from this world.’

Pilate said to him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king.

For this I was born, and for this I have come into this world, to bear witness to the truth.

Every one who is of the truth hears my voice,’” (John 18:36-37). [1]

Today we celebrate the supreme authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ as King of the Universe.

Today’s solemnity reminds us that his divine reign invites all mankind to “seek the peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ.”[2]

The celebration was instituted in 1925 in the encyclical Quas Primas by Pius XI.

After the Second Vatican Council, it was placed on the last Sunday before the beginning of Advent. [3][4]
